Roy and Fingle Golf Club

Roy Darlington chose to support Orchid during his year of captaincy at Fingle Golf Club as his father sadly passed away from testicular cancer in his twenties. Roy is passionate about raising awareness of male cancer as he believes that too many men are still unaware of the signs and symptoms and unwilling to talk about them.

What was the highlight of your year?

The highlight of the fund raising year was undoubtedly the FINGLE DOES STRICTLY evening. After 12 weeks of learning the dances and planning. To dance in front of 140 people crammed into the room. (we could easily have sold twice the amount of tickets) was amazing. FAB- U - LOUS. All 10 couples who danced, the panel of judges, those doing the demonstration dances and the audience thoroughly enjoyed what turned out to be the best fund raising event in the history of the club, raising over £3350. Personally, doing the exeter half marathon the following morning was probably not my greatest decision. However it did raise another £400 for the appeal.

What advice would you give to other fundraisers?

My advice to any fund raiser would be to come up with an idea to catch the imagination. Plan the event meticulously and make sure those involved (the participants and those giving the money) get something out of it. In these days it is important that people feel they are getting value for money.

Image At the end of 2011 Roy came in to the Orchid office and met Chief Executive, Rebecca Porta and Hannah from the Events Team. They were delighted to hear about the fantastic fundraising which he had organised and Roy presented Orchid with a cheque for £9,585. This huge total will make a real difference to Orchid and the men we support.

From all at Orchid we would like to say a big thank you to Roy and Fingle Golf Glub for all your hard work over the past year.

If you have been inspired by Roy's story and would like to organise your own fundraiser contact Hannah in the events department.
