Persuading your partner or loved one to visit the GP can be notoriously difficult. Many of us acknowledge that men simply don’t want to go – they will postpone the visit, “get better”, or simply become too busy. However there are times when a visit to the GP should not be put off. Here are a few tips for getting your man to the GP:
· Make it easy for him – give him the number and address of the GP. Go with him and offer to stay during the consultation.
· Remind him that ignoring a worrying symptom or problem won’t make it go away. A visit to the GP will reassure him everything is okay or will ensure prompt attention.
· Try to understand what the obstacle is. Is he worried about receiving bad news? Is there a family history of illness? Let him know you understand and will be there to support him.
· Encourage him to write down any questions before going to the GP and make sure he doesn’t leave until he understands the answers.
· Get informed. Find out as much as possible about his symptoms and talk about them. But remember not to diagnose.
· If all else fails use guilt! Tell him you are worried and this is making you upset.
· Avoid nagging. Be supportive, encouraging but determined.
· Remember to talk about the visit and acknowledge your appreciation.
