Orchid Roadshow visits the North West

Orchid received a generous grant of £10,500 to pilot a series of Orchid Male Cancer Awareness Roadshows in the North West.

The Roadshow visited Salford Shopping City, Salford on the 15 October and the 4 November and The Trafford Centre, Manchester on the 28 October. The Roadshow was a great opportunity for Orchid staff to raise awareness of male cancers, answer questions and offer practical information and support to visitors on a face to face basis. We were also pleased to meet several healthcare professionals and teachers who took copies of our leaflets, Factsheets, posters and DVD to use in their workplace.

The Roadshow was well supported by local media including Oldham Community Radio station (99.7fm), the Salford Advertiser and the Sale and Altrincham Advertiser.

Nearly 1,000 people visited the stands.  We found visitors particularly grateful for our presence to be those who rarely visited their GP, some who did not have access to internet or those with poor eye sight or literacy rates.  General information was given to boys under 21, many of whom did not realise that testicular cancer was something they should be aware of.

Did you know...

Research commissioned by Orchid found that men from the North West admit to knowing more about women’s cancers than those which affect only men. In fact, 46 per cent of North Westerners are most knowledgeable about the signs and symptoms of breast cancer compared to only 5 per cent who feel equally familiar with the symptoms of testicular cancer.
Prostate cancer is the most common male cancer, accounting for 24 per cent of men’s cancer cases, but one in five (20 per cent) men and women in the North West admit they don’t know anything about it. Over one in 10 North Westerners surveyed by Orchid (12 per cent) even thought this uniquely male cancer could be diagnosed in women.
